FAQ’s for Dual Systems

Q: I have noticed a drop in pressure and/or a reduced flow of water, and I don’t think it’s time to replace my cartridges.

A: The first step is to determine whether the flow is being restricted by the filter itself or by some other cause in the water line.  Temporarily disconnect the water filter system and check the flow again.  The next step is to double-check the installation of the filter. Verify there are no leaks and that all hose connections are properly connected on the in/out as indicated on the tops of the black housing lids. Remove all cartridges from the housings and check the flow again.  The last step is to check the cartridges themselves.  If you have a dual system, you’ll need to check each of the cartridges separately. Simply remove one of the cartridges, and check the flow. Then repeat with the other cartridge.  If it is determined that a new cartridge seems to have a restricted flow, it is possible that sediment or silt in the line or the water source has clogged the cartridge prematurely. Simply backwash this cartridge for 3-5 minutes by reversing the flow of water to help rinse out any sediment buildup.

Q: I have noticed a drop in pressure and/or a reduced flow of water.

A: Typically, a reduced flow is an indicator that it’s time to change your filter. Once the filter cartridge is loaded with contaminants, the flow of water will naturally start to decrease.  If you have a dual system, you’ll need to determine which of the two cartridges needs to be replaced. Simply remove one of the cartridges, and check to see if the flow increases. Then repeat with the other cartridge.

Q: I still have an odor, discoloration and/or contaminants coming through.

A: The first step would be to double-check the proper alignment of the cartridges within the filter housings. It is very important that the METALTRAP cartridge be aligned properly within the housing so the water flows directly through the center hole on the top of the cartridge. If it is not properly aligned, water can bypass the filter.

The next step would be to slow down your water flow by adjusting the valve on the inlet. Some water sources have higher levels of contaminants than others, and it is very important to allow for proper contact time within the filter to accommodate for these higher levels. TIP: The worse the water is, the slower the flow should be.

Lastly, it could be time to replace your filter. When odor and discoloration in the water returns, that is often a sign that you have reached the capacity of your filter cartridge.

Q: There is a leak.

A: The first step is to isolate the leak to determine exactly where it is coming from. Double-check all fitting joints are securely tightened. Keep in mind that Teflon tape needs to be replaced periodically to ensure a tightly sealed connection. Double-check the black O-ring is still in place in the top of the blue housing body. Ensure the cartridges are aligned properly within the housing and are not preventing the lid from being tightened all the way. Ensure the lid is securely fastened.

Q: My water source is extremely murky, cloudy, and/or loaded with sediment.

A: To accommodate for high levels of sediment in the water and to protect your METALTRAP cartridge from clogging prematurely, simply reverse the order of your cartridges temporarily. Place the 5 micron pleated cartridge in the first housing and the METALTRAP cartridge in the second housing. Rinse off the 5 micron pleated cartridge regularly to prevent the larger pieces of sediment from clogging the cartridge prematurely.
